The future of agriculture

The introduction of digital technologies into agriculture is key to more efficient and sustainable food production and strengthening the food security of the world’s population. The integration of new technologies leads to the improvement of production yields and the increase of value added in the agricultural industry. Globally, and also in Mexico, the digital transformation of rural areas where agriculture is most intensive is a profound change that the industry will have to face in the coming years.

Mexico, with approximately 32.4 million hectares of agricultural land, has the opportunity to boost its economy with the help of new technologies to increase productivity. Víctor Villalobos Arámbula, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, stressed that the agricultural sector is a solid pillar of economic growth and a source of wealth for the population, adding that the Mexican government has already initiated a major transformation in the country’s agriculture. Private, governmental and social actors should and through equitable collaboration, digitalize value chains in a sustainable way with the help of national and international investments.

The effects of climate change, drastic weather changes, heat, droughts and particularly intense rainy seasons are increasing sharply from year to year, making it difficult for agricultural production to function stably. With the help of smart technologies, the financial losses of farmers, even under difficult conditions, can be kept low and food security can be ensured. Digitization of the sector has a particularly positive impact on the lives of many farmers. The higher added value in harvesting and processing the products, contributes to reducing rural poverty and thus promotes the development of these regions.

However, it should not be forgotten that new intelligent systems require a stable digital infrastructure, which is not guaranteed in all parts of Mexico, and the acceptance of new technologies by farmers who are used to traditional methods also plays an important role. The Mexican government and industries must work with great strides to implement new technologies quickly and widely, as this is the best way to reap the benefits of industrialization.
