Mexico’s new opportunities for the medical industry

The medical devices sector, as well as the pharmaceutical industry, has great potential to improve the quality of life of the population. On the one hand, in terms of health through the development of new treatment technologies but also in terms of economic growth. In this way, research is promoted in many sectors and services for society are optimized.

The Mexican population is particularly affected by chronic degenerative diseases due to the lack of a balanced diet. The aging of the population, the spread of diabetes, heart disease and other diseases with a high epidemiological incidence are putting constant pressure on Mexico’s health system. In recent years, the medical sector has been particularly challenged due to the pandemic. The Covid-19 pandemic has put Mexico in an unfortunate position, putting even more strain on an already struggling health care system. At the same time, it is also a time of many new opportunities and opportunities for improvement for the industry and the healthcare sector.

One of Mexico’s advantages for the medical device industry is its competitiveness and high demand both domestically and in the United States. Also, the strength of the manufacturing cluster of the states of Baja California, Chihuahua, and Tamaulipas, located in the north, is a testament to the massive potential of advancing new technologies.

In Mexico, prior to the pandemic, some 2,500 companies were active in the medical device development sector. 600 of these companies export their products, making Mexico the largest exporter of medical products in Latin America and the eighth largest exporter in the world. In the future, the sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 4%. According to the OECD, Mexican residents have the second highest percentage of private health spending in the country. Further development of the sector can drive the transformation of the healthcare system and meet the needs of the population with comprehensive care.
